Cathay Dragon, previously known as Dragonair, is a regional airline based in Hong Kong. Headquartered in the country’s Cathay Dragon House, the airline’s main hub is at the Hong Kong International Airport. Founded in 1985, Cathay Dragon is a subsidiary of parent company, Cathay Pacific, and a member of the frequent flyer programs under Asia Miles and OneWorld. It is also a member of the loyalty program under The Marco Polo Club.

Cathay Dragon has a fleet size of 42 Airbus aircraft with a mix of single-aisle and wide-body configurations. The airline flies to 44 destinations including destinations in mainland China with codeshare agreements with Air China, Malaysia Airlines, Shenzhen Airlines and Cathay Pacific.

Cathay Dragon has won several awards given by different award-giving bodies. In 2016, it was awarded as the Best Airline – Economy Class by Business Traveller China and in 2015, it was awarded as the Best Regional Airline overall and in Asia by Skytrax World Airline Awards.

Ways To Check-In

Cathay Dragon offers its passengers various ways to check in for their convenience and comfort. Online check-in for Cathay Dragon and Cathay Pacific flights are available from 48 hours to 90 minutes before the flight departure time. With online check-in, you can select your seats, add or update your frequent flyer number as well as print your boarding pass or send a mobile boarding pass to your mobile device, if applicable. If you don’t have a printer available, you can collect your boarding pass at the airport through the check-in counter or through the Self Check-In Kiosks available in selected airports.

Baggage Allowance & Fees

All Cathay Dragon passengers are entitled to free baggage allowance varying depending on your booked travel class. You can also choose to purchase additional baggage allowance if needed.

Cathay Dragon follows the weight system in most flights. Economy class passengers are allowed a maximum of 2 pieces not exceeding a combined weight of 30 kilograms or 66 pounds. For Business class passengers, it goes up to a total combined weight of 40 kilograms or 88 pounds. Meanwhile, for First class passengers, you can check-in a maximum of 3 pieces of luggage not exceeding a total combined weight of 50 kilograms or 110 pounds. Passengers flying with infants and Marco Polo Club members are given additional baggage allowance so be sure to check Cathay Dragon’s official website for additional information.

For flights to and from the Central, North and South Americas, the piece system is followed. All classes are allowed a maximum of 2 pieces of luggage. For Economy class passengers, total combined weight should not exceed 23 kilograms or 50 pounds while Business and First class passengers are allowed up to 32 kilograms or 70 pounds. The total dimensions of each bag should also not exceed 158 centimeters or 62 inches including wheels, handles, and exterior pockets.

For cabin or hand carried baggage, all passengers are allowed 1 piece of luggage and 1 additional small item. For Economy and Premium Economy class passengers, weight should not exceed 7 kilograms or 15 pounds. Business class passengers are allowed up to 10 kilograms or 22 pounds while First class passengers are given up to 15 kilograms or 33 pounds. In addition to this, bags must not exceed the dimensions of 15cm x 30cm x 40cm or 6in x 12in x 16in.


Cathay Dragon flight offer at least 3 travel classes from Economy to First Class. Economy class seats offer a seat pitch of 6 inches with a headrest with side wings adjustable to four ways to give maximum comfort for your head and neck. Business class seats are 21 inches wide with extended leg rests and 6-way adjustable headrests. Each seat is a fixed shell design ensuring privacy and comfort for each passenger. Meanwhile, First Class passengers have private seats with direct access to aisles. Each seat is fitted with soft and luxurious leather and equipped with spacious storage that would fit a handbag or laptop bag. It also comes with a side cabinet for those items you want to keep close at hand.

In-flight Services

All seats are equipped with a personal screen that comes with an in-flight entertainment package offering an extensive library of the latest movies, TV programs as well as music and games to keep you occupied during the flight.
