Cheap Flights to Kiribati

Kiribati, officially known as the Independent and Sovereign Republic of Kiribati, is an island nation in the central tropical Pacific Ocean. Kiribati is a nation that is composed of 32 atolls and one raised coral island, Banaba, dispersed over 3.5 million square kilometers, straddling the equator, and bordering the International Date Line at its easternmost point amidst the Line Islands.

The name Kiribati is derived from the local pronunciation of Gilberts, after the British explorer Thomas Gilbert, who sailed through the islands in 1788. South Tarawa is the capital of Kiribati and it consists of a number of islets connected through a series of causeways, located in the Tarawa archipelago. Kiribati is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, the IMF and the World Bank, and became a full member of the United Nations in the year 1999.

Abemama – Abemama almost became Kiribati's capital but Tarawa finally won out because of the easier access through its surrounding reef. Tourists will be intrigued by a yellow barking frog that is found here, most likely introduced from Tuvalu to keep the mosquito population in check.

Abaiang - Being the most accessible out of all the outer islands, the name Abaiang means north land. Apart from just mainly enjoying the beach and the scenery, travelers can cycle up to the Catholic church to appreciate its rainbow-colored window frames.

Butaritari - Butaritari is one of the Outer Gilbert Islands. Butaritari is also Kiribati's greenest island, having breadfruit, coconut, pandanus, and other fruit-bearing trees that grow on its rich soils. The island also has a history relating to the World War II as the lopsided wreckage of a Japanese seaplane near Butaritari village attests.
