Flights to Saudi Arabia
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, or more commonly known as Saudi Arabia, is located in the Middle East and shares a border with Jordan, Iraq and Kuwait to the north, Oman and Yemen to the south, and the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Qatar to the east.
Saudi Arabia’s tourism industry is generally due to religious pilgrimage but there has been recent growth in the leisure tourism sector. The main destinations for religious pilgrims in Saudi Arabia are the holy cities of Mecca and Medina. Mecca receives over three million pilgrims annually during the Dhu al-Hijah in Haji and two million during the month of Ramadan in Umrah. Meanwhile, Medina is the second holiest city of Islam located just north Mecca. It should be noted that non-Muslims are not allowed to enter these holy cities.
When traveling to Saudi Arabia for leisure, here are just few tourist destinations recommended:
Sarawat Mountains – A mountain range running along the western coast of the Arabian Peninsula, Sarat is among the peninsula’s most notable geographical landscapes. It is also the largest mountain range in the Arabian Peninsula running pallarel to the Red Sea coast. The mountain range is largely made up of barren volcanic rock in the south and sandstone in the north. However, this barren landscape gives way to woodlands and green mountains further south towards Yemen.
Red Sea – Sometimes called the Erythraean Sea and lying between Africa and Asia, it is a seawater inlet of the Indian Ocean. The Red Sea, the world’s northernmost tropical sea, is also home to over 1,000 species and 200 soft and hard corals. The Red Sea is one of the most popular diving destinations. Many accommodations can now be found in the area including popular tourist resorts such as El Gouna, Hurghada and Marsa Alam.
Empty Quarter – Locally known as Rub’al-Khali, the Empty Quarter is an expensive desert in the southeast of the Arabian Peninsula. It is the largest continuous body of sand of the world. Traveling to the Empty Quarter would require permits from the National Commission for Wildlife Conservation and Development. It is best to arrange your visit with a registered tour agency. Wadi al-Dawasir (Sulayyil) and Sharurah are the usual entry points to the Empty Quarter from Riyadh.
Getting into Saudi Arabia can be done through any of the four international airports at King Fahd International Airport at Dammam, King Abdulaziz International Airport at Jeddah, Prince Mohammad Bin Abdulaziz Airport at Madinah and King Khalid International Airport at Riyadh. The country is served by Saudi Arabia’s national airline carrier, the Saudi Arabian Airlines or Saudia.
Meanwhile, getting around Saudi Arabia is fairly easy. However, there are still a few exceptions such as archaeological sites requiring permits for visitation and Mecca and Medina are off-limits to non-
Muslims. Also remote areas, particularly those around the Iraqi and Yemeni borders, are strictly restricted military zones.
