Kulula Airlines, known officially as kulula, com, is the first low-cost carrier originating from South Africa. Headquartered at Kempton Park in the province of Gauteng, the airline primarily operates domestic flights between O. R. Tambo International Airport and Lanseria International Airport, which are near the city of Johannesburg. It also operates regional flights to major cities in Africa. At present, kulula.com operates flights to 7 cities in South Africa, and 6 cities in Zimbabwe, Zambia, Namibia, Mauritius, and Kenya. Established since 2001, the company positions itself as a “full-on travel” website, rather than just an airline. Its website also allows passengers to hire cars, and book hotels and holiday packages. Kulula.com has won multiple awards over the years, including the Best Low-Cost Airline in Africa at the Skytrax World Airline Awards and Business Traveller Africa Awards in 2016.

Why Fly Kulula Airlines?

Check In

Online check-in is available on the website or on the mobile app (kulula.mobi) between 24 and 2 hours before the flight departure time. Passengers who have checked in online can print out their boarding passes at the airport or at home, but will need to arrive at the airport at least 90 minutes before the departure time. Once at the airport, you can bring your luggage to the baggage drop-off zone, before proceeding through security. Alternatively, passengers can also use the self-service kiosks, which are available at most major airports, to check-in. For passengers who need to go through the airport check-in counters, the flight number MN means that the flight is operated by kulula.com, while BA indicates that the flight is operated by British Airways. Please proceed to the correct check-in counter.

Seating Plan

Passengers are allowed to select their seats during online or mobile check-in. To guarantee that you are getting the seats that you want, you can opt for pre-paid seating, which costs R55 (South African Rand, or 199 pesos). As a low-cost carrier, there is only one basic seat class (Economy). However, you may opt for seats with extra legroom (in the Stretch Zone, i.e. the emergency exit row seats). If you would like one of these seats, please proceed to the check-in counter at least 90 minutes before departure to check regarding availability with the airline crew. Do note that passengers allocated these seats will need to adhere to specific safety requirements in times of emergency.

Baggage Guide

Each kulula.com ticket comes with one free checked bag, with a maximum weight of 20 kg. Infants have the same baggage allowance as adults. Additional bags can be purchased for R290 (1046 pesos) either online or by calling the Contact Centre at least 24 hours before departure. Do note that it will cost R385 (1389 pesos) to add a bag at the airport itself, so it is highly recommended that you make this purchase prior to arriving at the airport. Overweight bags will cost you an additional R300 (1082 pesos) at the airport. As per international standards, all passengers are allowed to bring hand baggage not exceeding 7 kg, plus a small personal bag or laptop bag.

In Flight Service

Kulula.com flight do not come with complimentary meals, but passengers can purchase food or drinks during the flight. Some options for food include sandwiches, cheese platters, or light snacks such as muffins, chips, or candy. Hot and cold drinks, as well as alcoholic beverages, can also be purchased. Do note that the kulula.com only accepts cash payment during flights.
