Cheap Flights to Greece

Greece is one of the most popular destinations in Europe thanks to its gorgeous beaches, historical sites and thriving nightlife. Most visitors travel to Greece between April through October where the peak season falls between July through August. While most tourists head to the more popular Crete and the Western Greek Isles, Greece offers many other pleasing areas lesser known and visited by tourists.

When one talks about Greece, what immediately comes to mind are white washed homes along blue domed churches overlooking sparkling blue sea. While this is arguably a very iconic scene for Greece, the country’s scenery varies greatly between regions. In the cities of Ermoupolis and Nafplion, visitors will find mostly Neoclassical architecture while in the city of Corfu, visitors will enjoy seeing the pastel-hued Baroque churches and houses. Greece’s landscape is also quite varied. Throughout the country tourists will find a variety of tranquil beaches, lush forests, majestic mountain ranges and stretches of wine valleys and olive orchards. It is also home to many historic castles, churches and temples.

When planning your holiday to Greece, here are just a few tourist spots and destinations to keep in mind:

Athens – The country’s capital and the largest city in Greece, Athens is where you will find many popular tourist destinations. It is home to 148 theatrical stages including the ancient Odeon of Herodes Atticus where the Athens Festival is staged from May to October every year. Just to name a few of the top destinations in Athens, the city is where you will find the Acropolis, the Pantheon, the Temple of Olympic Zeus, and many more.

Crete – One of the largest and most populous of the Greek Islands, it is also one of the most popular holiday destinations in the country. Due to a booming tourism industry, Crete now has a wide range of accommodations from large luxury hotels to smaller privately owned apartments. When in Crete, do not miss the archaeological sites of the Minoan Civilization, the Venetian castle at Rethymno, the Palm Beach of Vai and the many smaller islands in the area.

Meteora – It is one of the largest and most important complexes of Greek Orthodox monasteries. It is home to six monasteries that were built on natural sandstone rock pillars most of which are perched on high cliffs accessible by staircases cut into the rock formation. It is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. To get to Meteora from Athens, the easiest way would be to get a train that goes to Kalampaka which is the city below Meteora.

Greece has several international airports across the country. The country’s largest and busiest airport is the Elefthérios Venizélos International Airport located in the Athens suburb of Spáta. It is also the main hub and serves over 15 million passengers per year. Other international airports include the Nikos Kazantzákis International Airport in Heraklion, Makedonia International Airport in Thessaloniki, Diagóras Airport in Rhodes and Ioánnis Kapodístrias Airport in Corfu. The airports in Athens and Thessaloniki serves most of the scheduled international flights.

Getting around in Greece is fairly easy. The country offers intercity buses which is also a popular option for traveling domestically. Greece’s bus system is considered to be reliable, efficient and inexpensive. Its services covers almost the entire country offering both long and short distance services. These include bus routes from major cities to islands such as Corfu and Cephalonia.

Exploring the city by car is another option. Roads in Greece are usually well-marked with signage and are well-maintained. While having a private car can give you the freedom to travel between cities and see the different terrains of Greece, gas and toll fees can be expensive with parking oftentimes proving difficult. Driving in Greece may also be challenging and can take some time getting used to as Greece has many twisting mountainous roads some of which are right along cliff edges. So when deciding to travel by car, be careful and mindful as the country has a national reputation of risky driving and has a high accident rate.
