Cheap Flights to Honduras

Honduras, a country in Central America, lies in a strategic position in the western hemisphere. It is bordered by Nicaragua on its southeast, El Salvador on the southwest, and Guatemala on its west. Belize is just nearby the northwest portion of the country, which also faces the gulf, an inlet of the Caribbean Sea. This location of Honduras made it a critical territory for the Spaniards who colonized it in 1524. From here, forces were deployed to guard the country from the other Europeans who scrambled to the Americas in search of new lands to conquer.

After the liberation in 1821, the economy of Honduras remained poor due to the lack of proper channeling of funds as well as a lenient taxation scheme for foreign companies that set up operations in the country. International mining conglomerates are particular offenders, which have drilled various minerals from the rich natural resources of Honduras. This makes the country struggle to maintain its agricultural economy as well as liven up its textile industry to cope with its increasing needs.

What to see & do

Many advisories may warn about the danger of traveling in Honduras, but tourists can enjoy a trip here as long as one is conscious about their safety. Those who go here will find that the attractions are numerous in this Central American country. Beautiful natural sights abound such as in Bay islands, located just off the north shore. Diving and snorkeling are the primary activities here, as the reefs form a part of the second-largest barrier reef in the world. The adventurous at heart will delight at the sight of fishes, sea turtles, and rays swimming about the corals. Whales sometimes go by, which can be an amazing sight for those who have not seen these majestic creatures up close.

Those looking for a slice of history can go straight to the Copán ruins, one of the most important sites of the Mayan civilization. Its excavation in the 19th century yielded various artifacts and cultural treasures that once thrived in the political and religious center of the region. Visitors will marvel at the Hieroglyphic Stairway Plaza, which contain the longest known inscription of the Mayan people. The Ceremonial Plaza, where many events and festivals have been held, is also an astounding sight to view, with its stadium containing ornately carved monoliths and altars.

Tegucigalpa, also known by its diminutive name Tegus, makes another beautiful destination. The highland valley where it stands enables the city to experience fine scenery. Those who would like to stay in the city will enjoy a variety of colonial buildings and museums that attest to its history. Travelers looking for a hip party scene will also find an excellent spot here in Tegus, where emerging musicians and DJs liven up the nightlife. From here, tourists can taste various street food delicacies such as baleades, thick flour tortillas usually filled with a mix of beans, cheese, and Honduran-style sour cream. Some substitute these with meat, eggs, or avocado. Eat a serving with tostones, crunch deep-fried plantains, and one can get by to the next phase of sightseeing.

How to get around

When going around in the country, travelers must experience a boat ride. It is relatively faster than going on road where some of the paths are unpaved and bumpy. Buses also maintain service within the city limits, but it can be dangerous to ride here due to the gangs that require a toll fee from the bus or passengers before going in a certain direction. This makes renting a car a more amenable option for those in the city. One must have insurance, however, as it is the general regulation in Honduras.
