3car car hire at a glance

Cities to rent in1
To give you an idea of how much renting a car with 3car could cost, we've pulled prices from the most popular city to rent a car in with 3car which is London.

Everything you need to know before you pick up the keys

Booking car hire is straightforward when you know what to expect. Whether this is your first time or you hire regularly, here's what's worth knowing before you collect your rental.

Car hire age rules

Most drivers must be at least 21–25 for car hire.

The exact car hire age limit depends on the car hire company. If you're under 25, you'll probably need to pay a young driver fee on top of the hire price. Some premium or larger cars have stricter age limits too, so it's worth checking before you book.

The documents you need

Bring your driving licence and credit card.

You'll need both of these at pick-up. Some companies accept debit cards, but it's not guaranteed. If you're travelling somewhere that requires an International Driving Permit (IDP), sort that before you go.

Car hire deposits

A deposit is held on your card — not charged.

When you pick up the car, the company puts a hold on your card. The money doesn't actually leave your account, it's just reserved while you have the car. You get it back once you return it without damage, but it can sometimes take a few days.

Car hire insurance and excess

Insurance is included, but there's an excess.

Most car hire bookings include a collision damage waiver (CDW). If the car is damaged, you'll usually have to pay an excess. You can take out excess insurance to help cover that cost, either through the rental company or from a separate insurance provider.

Fuel and mileage

Full-to-full is usually the fairest option.

You pick up the car with a full tank and return it full, so you only pay for what you use. Pre-paid fuel options may seem appealing, but you can end up paying more if you don't use the whole tank. Check whether unlimited mileage is included too, as some rentals charge for extra miles.

Optional extras

The price covers the car and one driver.

Need a child seat, sat nav or additional driver? Costs vary depending on where and who you're hiring from, and they can add up on longer trips. If you know you'll need any of these, build them into your budget when you compare prices.
