Air Koryo is the national flag carrier of North Korea. It is also North Korea’s only airline. Air Koryo operates from its hub at Pyongyang Sunan International Airport and offers scheduled and charter services to points in within North Korea and about a dozen destinations in Asia and Russia. International cities served by Air Koryo include Beijing, Shenyang, Shanghai, Vladivostok, Bangkok, and Kuwait. Air Koryo is one of only two airlines that fly to North Korea at the moment. Air China is the other airline that operates flights to North Korea.

Air Koryo has an online booking service, but check-in can only be done at the airport counters. Check-in counters open about 3 hours before the scheduled departure time. There are separate Business Class and Economy Class check-in counters. Passengers should allow enough time for check-in and departure process at the airport and have the necessary travel documents on hand.

Seating Plan

The airlines in Air Koryo’s fleet of about 20 aircraft either have a single-cabin (Economy Class) and two-cabin (Business Class and Economy Class) configuration. However, there is not much difference between the seats in the two cabin classes, other than a better legroom of 40" seat pitch in the Business Class seats in front of the aircraft. The seats in the Business Class are in a 2-2 configuration, while the Economy Class cabin is arranged in a 3-3 configuration.

Baggage Allowance

The free checked baggage allowance for most flights on Air Koryo is 20kg. for Economy Class passengers and 30kg. for Business Class. Baggage in excess of these allowances the excess baggage charges shall be paid. Each passenger is also allowed to have one piece of carry-on baggage that can be placed in the closed overhead rack or under the passenger seat. The total sum of the cabin baggage dimensions must not exceed 115cm, and the total weight does not exceed 5kg.

In Flight Service

F&B: Complimentary meals and beverages are served on all of Air Koryo’s international flights. The food choices are simple and not quite the same as you would see in other airlines. The drinks served are all North Korean brands and are free-flow throughout the flight.

Entertainment: Air Koryo has LCD screens on some of their aircraft. However, the inflight programming is limited the aircraft safety demonstration and some North Korean programming. North Korean newspapers and magazines are also available for reading. There is duty-free shopping, but again, it is limited to North Korean products.
