When looking for a car rental, you will have to show either a Thai driving license or a valid foreign driving license with a photograph. If you do not have a license in English, you can get an official translation from your embassy. An International Driver's Permit will also be accepted, and is often more accepted by police and civil service officials.
What to expect when hiring a car from Bangkok
When driving a car in Bangkok, you should know how to maneuver carefully and act with proper defensive driving. Thai drivers are generally polite, but they can be reckless. It is not unusual to see a family of six and a pet in a tuktuk passing by on the street. The traffic can be constant here, especially during the times of commute on the mornings and late afternoons. Weekends can also be crowded, so schedule your trips around the rush hours.
The expressways of Bangkok are regulated by tolls, which you can pay with an Easy Pass card. To activate this, you will have to buy a device and put it on your car to be detected by the booth. Loading the Easy Pass card with enough amount of money is also necessary, so you can pay your dues electronically. Congestion charges are also not applicable yet in the city. When going around, you should also be careful of keeping a safe distance from the cyclists. Parking can also be difficult to manage in Bangkok, so it would be better to coordinate with a hotel about reserving a parking slot for your rental car.
Getting to your destination
There are various places to check out when exploring from Bangkok. Some of them are:
A town of historical importance, Ratchaburi is located on the banks of the Mae Klong River. It features a diverse topography, from the lowlands in the east to the Tanaosi Mountain Range to the west, which provides a natural barrier with Myanmar.
Get on Route 4 in ตำบล ท่าตำหนัก from ทางคู่ขนานลอยฟ้า บรมราชชนนี and ถนน บรมราชชนนี/Route 338 and then follow Route 4 to ตำบล หลุมดิน, before driving to อำเภอ in ตำบล หน้าเมือง. The trip can be made in an hour and 35 minutes, depending on the traffic conditions.
Believed to be the site of the legendary Suvarnabhumi that was mentioned in the ancient Buddhist texts, Suphan Bori has been continuously occupied since the 9th century. Other than historical heritage, Suphan Buri is also rich in natural resources. Some of the natural landmarks to be seen here are Weluwan Cave and Pu Toei National Park.
Drive from ทางคู่ขนานลอยฟ้า บรมราชชนนี, Route 9 and Route 340 to ตำบล ท่าพี่เลี้ยง and then move forward to Phra Pan Vasa Road to reach Suphan Buri. The journey can take an hour and 30 minutes, which is the general time of arrival unless there are traffic issues to deal with.
Also known as Paet Rio, this area is a fertile agricultural region fed by the Bang Pakong River. Archeological digs are also a major interest here, as skeletons about five thousand years old were found in the area of Khok Phanomadee.
Get on ทางพิเศษศรีรัช in แขวง ทุ่งพญาไท and follow ถนน กรุงเทพ-พัทยา สายใหม่ to ตำบล ท่าสะอ้าน. Take the exit towards Route 314/Chachoengsao from กรุงเทพ-ชลบุรี สายใหม่/ทางหลวงพิเศษหมายเลข 7 and continue onto Route 314 to your destination in ตำบล หน้าเมือง. The trip can be managed in an hour and 30 minutes, with tolls to pay in some parts of the route.
