A paradise

If a welcoming lodge is looking for with friendly staff, nice rooms and fantastic food, then look no further. This lodge has it all. And the boat trip with guide Tefo on the Chobe is a must. So much beauty.
When I come back to Chobe, I stay at Chobe river lodge again.

Stay from 13.-15.04.2026
When we arrived, we were greeted by the staff in a friendly manner and familiarized with the conditions of the lodge. We had to sign a one-and-a-half page information with rules of conduct in English. The lodge hereby insures itself against damage claims.
The facility is very nice, the rooms friendly but sparsely decorated. There is a lack of storage facilities, e.g. for charging electronic devices or even just putting a laptop down and processing your e-mails. The sheet of feedback from the guest about the stay we had to lay as a pad on the soft leather sofa and fill in. So far, these have been little things to live with.
What didn't work was the food on the first night. This one was so grotto bad that it hit me on the stomach. I'm not a chef, but this food was not freshly cooked but warmed up. The fish was so hard that you could not get it from the bones or with great effort. In addition, the whole dining room was full of flying vermin attracted by the white light. A different light color would not solve the problem completely but would definitely reduce it. Then the staff poured the wine into the already provided wine glasses and there were immediately smaller animals swimming in the glass. We are campers and know that there are mosquitoes and other insects, but we have not had anything like this in the lodges we visited before. In the salad I found another fly at the end of the meal. I hope at least she liked it!!!
After contacting our agency where we booked the trip to draw attention to these grievances, we were promised that the following evening the food should be of the usual quality and the management of the lodge wanted to see for themselves. The food was then also good, the management we did not get to see, but we had such an insect problem that taking the food outside was not possible. There were only insects whimpering in and around the dining room. At our request, we eat in our room where there is no flying vermin and we wanted a table with two chairs, the staff was completely overwhelmed. There was no table or chairs, so we sat down at the unlit bar and ate there. The food was good and the flying vermin was limited. But on the counter where we ate was an ant road that we only noticed when they crawled noticeably on us as well.
The rest of the evening we then spent in our room. A female employee came to our room and apologized on behalf of the management for the inconvenience and told us that we didn't have to pay for the game drive we had done the day before. A nice gesture from the management but that does not fix the existing problems. We weren't looking to get anything waived or gifted because other guests have the same problem later. I would have liked to have talked to a representative of the management and possibly also shown solutions to the problems. Since we have been to some other lodges before and after, we have not found this problem in any of the lodges.

Great safari drive and cruises

We stayed for 3 nights on a fully inclusive package and thoroughly enjoyed the safari drives and river cruises. Chobe National Park is abundant with wildlife and we were lucky enough to see lions, elephants, hippos, giraffes, crocodiles and zebra, to name just a few. It was a wonderful experience.
We stayed in a Luxury Riverview Double Room on the ground floor. I wouldn’t really describe it as a “riverview” room, more of a river glimpse — perhaps the upper-level rooms have a better outlook. The room itself was spacious and comfortable, however it did feel a little like a goldfish bowl when the curtains were open, as people walking past could easily see in.
The food was good overall, and there was always a vegetarian option available on the menu without needing to ask.

Exceptional in every way!

We stayed at the lodge for three nights and it was a wonderful experience. The setting is superb, looking down onto the Chobe River. We had an amazing welcome, cool drinks, face cloths and smiling faces, it felt special and set the tone for our stay. Anja and her team can’t do enough for you, but there is a very relaxed atmosphere. The lodge is beautifully decorated and fitting with the setting. The food was very tasty and well cooked and presented. There isn’t a huge amount of choice for the evening meal, but we didn’t expect that in a small lodge and it suited us very well and was really enjoyable. We did three game drives and two river cruises while we were there. The guides were exceptional and went above and beyond to make the experience special. We had most of our excursions with BK, the Botswana King! He is such a lovely man and we felt very privileged to be taken out by this kind and knowledgeable man. We saw lots of wildlife even though it is the end of the rainy season. We saw a male lion, lionesses, elephants, giraffes, Kudu, Impala, wart hogs, hippos, crocodiles and numerous beautiful birds and also a dung beetle in action! The weather was delightful, sunny and warm, but not ridiculously hot. It was quiet in Botswana and we couldn’t understand why more people wouldn’t visit at this time of year. It was perfect for us!
The rooms are spacious, comfortable and appropriately and well decorated. Ours faced the river and had a balcony.
On the morning we went out early on a game drive, we had a light breakfast before we went and a full one on our return! We didn’t manage lunch on that day.
Our next stop was Victoria Falls and Anja was kind enough to recommend some things to do and places to eat. Her advice has been so helpful and has made our stay in Victoria Falls amazing! We would like to thank all the staff who looked after us so kindly and well. It was a privilege to stay at Chobe River Lodge and would recommend it to anyone thinking of going to Botswana.
Also, all the transport arranged by the hotel was superb and the transfer between Zimbabwe and Botswana was seamless.

A gem on the Chobe River

Situated on the banks of the Chobe River, the Chobe River Lodge distinguishes itself from similar establishments in that it has only 12 rooms. This makes the whole experience far more personal - something my wife and I experienced first hand.
All the staff were amazing while Anja, in particular, was incredibly attentive. Even before we arrived she was in regular contact ensuring that we were fully prepared for the weather and detailed everything we might need to facilitate smooth border crossings. The excursions Anja organised for us were excellent while the food at the lodge was delicious.
Our stay was so enjoyable that we are already making plans for a return visit later this year.
