General Santos International Airport serves the general area of SOCCSKSARGEN (Region XII) in the Philippines. Formerly known as General Santos City Airport, it is officially classified as an international airport by the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines, although it currently processes only domestic flights. It was constructed to handle inbound visitors for the 42nd Palarong Pambansa (National Games) held in the region in 1996, and is now the largest airport on Mindanao Island. Its domestic destinations include Manila and Cebu.
The Airport is located about nine miles from the city of General Santos. Known locally as “GenSan”, this city is a highly-urbanized first-class city boasting advanced technological and commercial growth. It is recognized as the shopping capital of the SOCCSKSARGEN region. The dominant language here is Cebuano, although most citizens are conversant in English.
To get to General Santos Airport from the city, public jeepneys and private car services can be flagged from major roads. Travelers can also peruse airport-bound shuttle buses from major hotels in the city.
