Cameroon, one of the relatively peaceful countries in Central Africa, is an interesting place to visit. Travelers going here will find Yaounde, its capital, comparatively beautiful. Those planning to visit here can consider going through Yaounde Ville Airport, but this port of entry is currently closed to public use. An alternative entry point can be Yaounde Nsimalen International Airport, which gets the majority, if not all, of the flights coming in from outside the country.
Although nearer to the city than the recently built Nsimalen International Airport, Yaounde Ville Airport faces limited growth due to the expanding city boundaries. It is also close to the oil deposits of SCDP. This has prevented further renovation from taking place, which led to Yaounde Ville Airport being exclusively used as a military base for the national air force.
What to see & do
Yaounde is a source of marvel for many visitors to Cameroon. The city can be enchanting due to its well-planned layout consisting of well-maintained streets and decorative civic buildings built in the 1970s. Green spaces also surround this capital, making it an attractive place to visit. Those new to the city can check out the Musee d'Art Camerounais to see an impressive collection of masks, bronzework, and wooden pieces. Other examples of Cameroonian art are also on display. After looking at the exhibits, one can then check out the chapel lying in the Benedictine monastery where the museum is housed.
Those interested in more art can take off to the Benedictine Museum of Mont Febe. One will see here the expanded collection of Fr. Luitfried Marfu't, which began when he saw a set of Abbias or nutshells with carvings. From here, one can head to Afhemi Museum where one can spend hours looking at more than 2,000 artifacts. Traditional art creations, antiques, and paintings are also shown prominently here, which can be absorbing to look at.
Other landmarks to see include more religious structures such as the Cathedrale Notre Dame des Victoires, the seat of the Archdiocese of Yaounde. Its imposing design makes the roofs almost touch the ground. This white church, however, is yet unfinished with the bell tower just about to be constructed. From here, one can head to the Basilique Marie-Reine-des-Apôtres, a Roman Catholic church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. This church, commissioned by the archdiocese, was built on the site of the first church built by the missionaries when they first settled in Yaounde.
Travelers visiting with little ones can also check out other child-friendly locales in the city. There is Mvog-Betsi Zoo, run by the Cameroon Wildlife Aid Fund, which can delight them. Native primates and other species rescued from poachers and bush meat traders. Visiting here can help with the conservation effort and continue the rescue of more animals hunted in the wild.
