 San Francisco International Airport, USA

The San Francisco International Airport first started taking shape in 1927. That 150-acre airport with a dirt strip was known as Mills Field Municipal Airport. It was only in 1955 that the airport finally grew into San Francisco International Airport.

The three domestic terminals provide service to more than 75 U.S. airports on 15 domestic airlines, and one international terminal provides non-stop service to more than 30 international locations on 30 international carriers.

At Domestic Terminal 1, you will find airlines like US Airways, Delta Airlines, and Alaska Airlines. At Domestic terminal 2, American Airlines and Virgin America. Domestic Terminal 3 is where United Airlines, and Air Canada can be found.

At their only International Terminal, you will find more than 30 International Carriers that include industry heavy weights like Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines, Emirates, and Cathay Pacific.

To travel between the domestic terminals and international terminal, passengers can either walk, or take the AirTrain that moves in a loop.

Both upon arrival and when departing, you will find a multitude of shops and services to suit your every need. Everything from books, apparels, cosmetics, liquor and tobacco, can either be found in the public or departure areas. You will find an impressive array of shopping opportunities, especially inside the duty-free departure area.

Services and Facilities

Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the airport. If you are traveling for business and require a power outlet for your laptop, there are workstations littered across the terminals for you to work comfortably. Frequent and premium passengers of airlines will find that many airlines maintain a lounge for extra comfort and services at San Francisco International. There is a business center in the international terminal catering to business travelers who may need mobile phone rentals, Internet access, fax and copying services.

If you are traveling with children, you will find a handful of activities that can keep your children entertained. You can take your children on an AirTrain ride and enjoy the stunning views of the airfield with them. If you want more visual entertainment, you can take your family to InMotion Entertainment where you will find DVD players and movie rentals available to you.

If you are worried your children will have too much energy on their flight, you can bring them to the Play Spots at terminals 2 and 3 to burn off some of that energy. With time on hand, you might want to visit the Aviation Museum and Library where you can learn more about the development of commercial aviation. Alternatively, you can find out what the current museum exhibitions are, and take a walk through.

ATMs and Currency Exchange can easily be located within terminals. If you are feeling thirsty and just want drinking water, there are Hydration Stations conveniently located near gates at all the terminals. If you are feeling under the weather, there is a Medical Clinic in the international terminal, on the departure level.

If you require assistance or information at any point, there are information booths and staff on hand at every terminal, pre and post-security.

If you need a place to rest for the night, there are several hotels within a 5-10 minute drive of the airport. You may want to make a reservation with The Westin San Francisco Airport, Hampton Inn and Suites San Francisco, Aloft San Francisco Airport, or San Francisco Airport Marriot Waterfront.
