Pagadian Airport is located 5 km from the city of Pagadian, Philippines. It is the gateway to Pagadian City, as well as the provinces of Zamboanga del Sur and Zamboanga Sibugay. The airport underwent an expansion that was completed in 2009, and was inaugurated by Former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
Following the availability of more funds, it is scheduled to receive further upgrades on its facilities, such as an expansion of its runway and an improvement on the passenger terminal. Currently, it is classified as a Principal Airport Class 1 (Major Domestic) airport by the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines.
There is only one passenger terminal and one runway. Pagadian Airport is connected to just two other airports, both domestic: Mactan Cebu International in Cebu, and Ninoy Aquino International in Manila.
Services and Facilities
There are a handful of hotels within 2 km of the airport. The Four Queens Hotel is the closest in proximity; a mere 0.87 km away. Other hotels include the EP Executive Suites, Mardale Hotel and Chandler Suites. Should you require transport to your accommodation, it is worth asking at the airport if hotel shuttles are available.
Pagadian is the capital city to the province of Zamboanga del Sur. Because of its promising future as the regional centre of Western Mindanao, it has been nicknamed the ‘Little Hong Kong to the South’. A unique feature of Pagadian stemming from its mountainous terrain are its inclined tricycles, set at a 25° to 40° angle to best enable them to negotiate the hilly slopes. Most of them are brightly coloured, and fares start at Php9, which makes them even more economical forms of transport than the motorbikes (habal-habal).
Pagadian is primarily fishing port and is not particularly geared towards tourism. However, its natural landscape does lend itself to outdoor activities that you can enjoy. Rotonda is a circular park and popular haunt for cyclists, bikers and horseback riders. Set on an elevated plane overlooking the blue waters of Yllana Bay, it is a pleasant place to spend a day at with the family. Feeling adventurous? Go for a trek in Mt Palpalan, another of Pagadian’s adventure spots. Otherwise, join the locals at Plaza Luz on Saturday morning for the free TaeBo in front of the Giant Clam Stage.
Southeast from the seaport is the White Beach, ideal for swimming and diving. It can be reached via motorboat. The coral reefs by nearby Dao-Dao Islands may be manmade, but it is nonetheless a relaxing place. Back in the city, indulge in some fresh-caught seafood at the GreenHouse Fishing Station and Restaurant, set atop a large fishpond!
