Sisimiut Airport

Sisimiut Airport is a public-use airport located 4.1 kilometers northwest of the town of Sisimiut in Greenland. The airport is operated by Mittarfeqarfiit. It resides at an elevation of 33 feet (10 meters) above mean sea level, and has a single asphalt paved runway designated 14/32, measuring 2,621 feet x 98 feet (799 meters x 30 meters) that is located on the northern shore of Kangerluarsunnguaq Bay.

Before Sisimiut Airport, the town was served by a now-closed heliport situated in Sisimiut valley, on the eastern outskirts of Sisimiut town. The airport was built in the 1990s, as part of the regional airport network extension in Greenland. Aside from Sisimiut Airport, others were Maniitsoq Airport (in Qeqqata municipality), Aasiaat Airport (in western Greenland), and Qaarsut Airport and Upernavik Airport (in northwestern Greenland). There are no roads that connect Sisimiut to any other settlement.

Sisimiut, formerly Holsteinsborg, is a town on the coast of Davis Strait in central-western Greenland, the country's second largest town and its northernmost town. It serves as the administrative center of the Qeqqata municipality. When in Sisimiut, fun and unique activities include dog sledding trips, snowmobiling, hiking, river fishing, and participating in the Arctic Circle Race.

The terminal building has a Post Greenland box, a vending machine for soft drinks, a television for entertainment, and a small exhibition from the Sisimiut Museum. There is a workstation in kiosk mode that provides airport, municipal, and tourist information. There is no de-icing equipment at the airport, which makes it costly and problematic in the Greenlandic winter.

Services and Facilities

Sisimiut Airport is exclusively served by Air Greenland for scheduled flights. It offers direct flights to Aasiaat Airport in Aasiaat, Ilulissat Airport in Ilulissat, Kangerlussuaq Airport in Kangerlussuaq, Maniitsoq Airport in Maniitsoq, and Nuuk Airport in Nuuk. Passengers connecting through the airport and taking the same plane to another destination are still required to alight from the aircraft and undergo regular boarding process. After all the protocol checks, the passenger may re-board the aircraft and continue the flight. Aside from commercial service, Sisimiut Airport is also used for general aviation purposes.
