Kota Kinabalu International Airport is the main gateway to the city of Kota Kinabalu, the state capital of Sabah, Malaysia. Located about 8km from the city center, the Airport is one of the busiest in Malaysia. It covers both local and international destinations around the globe, and is recognized as one of the country’s most modern facilities for aviation and travel, rivaled only by Kuala Lumpur International Airport. During the World War II era, it was known as Jesselton Airfield.
The Airport comprises two passenger terminals, located about 4kg from each other. Terminal 1 is the newer facility that handles international flights, including destinations like Perth, Tokyo, Seoul, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Puerto Princesa, and domestic flights operated by Malaysian Airlines. Local destinations include major cities like Johor Bahru and Kuala Lumpur.
Terminal 2, while equipped primarily to serve low-cost carrier AirAsia, is also utilized by full-service airlines. Destinations to and from Terminal 2 also encompass both domestic and foreign cities, including Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Taipei, and Manila.
The Airport Bus shuttle service provides transport between Terminals 1 and 2. Tickets can be purchased at the Airport Bus booth outside the terminals, and the bus stops are marked with “Bas Airport” signs. The service runs from 7.30am to 7pm daily.
Services and Facilities
Both terminals of Kota Kinabalu Airport are well-endowed with facilities for all passenger needs. Brand restaurants, cafes, and fast food chains, as well as duty-free retailers, are available at both sites. Terminal 1 has a bookstore and souvenir shop, and Terminal 2 has a seafood store. The latter also has an eatery that sells mostly local fare.
Local Maybank ATMs, which accept major international cards, are available in both terminals for visitors to extract local currency. The foreign exchange desks operate during office hours. Other banks and post offices can also be found at both terminals.
Medical facilities can be found at the airport clinic for emergency services and minor treatment, and a general hospital for greater emergencies is situated 5km from the airport.
