Virgin America was founded in 2004 and began flying in 2007. Its headquarters are in California in the Bay Area of San Francisco flying out primarily of the SFO Airport. Its parent company is the British Virgin Group. Virgin America typically operate flights between major cities on either the eastern or western coast of continental America. These domestic destinations form the biggest bulk of its route network with 21 domestic airports. Virgin America also flies to 3 cities in Mexico. Virgin flies on an Airbus only fleet. Its frequent flyer program is called Elevate and give rewards and other benefits to loyal travelers.

As of 2016, Virgin America has been acquired by the Alaska Air Group, at a cost of approximately 4 billion USD. With this acquisition, Alaska Air Group welcomes Virgin America as a sister airline to Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air and is looking to merge Virgin America with Alaska Airlines with a single airline operating license from 2019.

On 5 October 2017, an official announcement was made that all Virgin America flights will officially become Alaska Airlines flights as of April 2018. With the merger, Alaska Airlines becomes the 5th largest airline behind American Airlines, Delta, United and Southwest.

Check In Guide

Online check-in is available on the Virgin America website or via the Alaska Air mobile app. Passengers will need to enter their last name and their ticket number or confirmation code to retrieve their booking. Online or mobile check-in is available between 24 hours and 1 hour before the departure time. Passengers in First and Main Cabin Select classes are entitled to priority screening and boarding for an additional US$15-19.

Seating

Virgin America has three classes of seats – First Class, Main Cabin Select, and Main Cabin. In addition, there are two types of tickets, ones that are refundable and ones that are not. Main Cabin seats have a seat pitch of 32-inch. Main Cabin Select seats have a seat pitch of 37-38 inches, depending on the aircraft, and have up to 6 additional inches of legroom. First Class seats are recliners with a seat pitch of 55 inches and plenty of legroom. All seats come with a plug to charge your electronic devices.

Baggage Guide

First Class passengers get 2 complimentary checked bags. All Main Cabin Select passengers and Main Cabin passengers with refundable tickets get 1 free checked bag. All other passengers will need to pay US$25 for each checked bag that they have. Overweight bag (between 51-70 lbs) will cost US$50 for all seat classes.

In Flight Service

Passengers seated in first class receive complimentary meals, refreshments and alcoholic beverages and receive dedicated airport check-in, security screening, and aircraft boarding. In first class, Red offers free live satellite television, free on-demand movies, free on-demand television programming and a selection of games. Virgin America is famous for its pioneering of in-flight innovative concepts like moodlighting and on demand food to become one of the most valued consumer airlines before its merger.

Following the merger with Alaska Airlines, Red mirrors Alaska's inflight service by offering live satellite television, on-demand movies, on-demand television shows, and a selection of games for free. Furthermore, in addition to the free beverage service, passengers can order more complimentary non-alcoholic beverages, or purchase snacks, meals, and alcoholic beverages from their seats via Red.
