Suvarnabhumi (pronounced as "su-wan-na-poom") Airport or the (new) Bangkok International Airport opened its doors to commercial flights on September 2006. It replaces the old Don Mueang Airport. The name Suvarnabhumi was chosen by the country's king, Bhumibol Adulyadej, which means the "Golden Land" that refers to the Indochina region composed of Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Burma. The new Bangkok International Airport can handle about 45 million passnegers and 3 million tons of cargo yearly. It is serving as the main hub for Thai Airways, Bangkok Airways and Orient Thai Airlines. With two parallel runways and 2 parallel taxiways that can accommodate simultaneous departures and arrivals, Suvarnabhumi Airport can serve more than 70 flights per hour. Cebu Pacific has flights from both Ninoy Aquino International Airport and Clark International Airport going to Bangkok. Philippine Airlines, on the other hand, has daily flights to Bangkok from Manila only.
